In the final stretches of the 2020 presidential election campaign, polls show Joe Biden gaining momentum. Anderson mixes real world and fictional events in this novel about the tumult facing the nation leading up to Biden's inauguration. His protagonists delve into secret meetings of Presidents Putin and Trump at summits, intent to learn of any duplicity by Trump regarding Ukraine. When Putin’s longtime interpreter, Dmitri Petrov, hints at defection, a plan is set in motion to convince candidate Biden, if elected, to approve Petrov’s escape.
The author takes us from Annapolis, Maryland to Washington D.C., to Moscow, and Latvia, where the CIA awaits Petrov. After hours of tension and disappointment and a near disastrous helicopter escape, Petrov delivers a digital recording of Putin and Trump discussing ways to undermine Ukraine. The revelations are so consequential that President Biden delivers an urgent letter for Senator Leahy to read before he calls for the Senate vote on Trump’s second impeachment.

When I read Ward Anderson’s first iteration of this fascinating novel a few years ago, it seemed like fiction. Spellbinding but pretty far out.
Now, with all that has happened in the interim — including Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, his hostage taking and subsequent prisoner swaps, the imprisonment of Russian dissidents, the death (murder) of Navalny and the tumultuous American political scene — nothing in relations between the West and Russia seem unimaginable. Hats off to Ward Anderson for capturing a potential scenario in such fine and suspenseful detail. –Phil Brown
Ward Anderson has crafted a compelling, deeply detailed novel around events that shaped our political and national security experience. This fictional account pulls the reader into a world of subterfuge and deception few have experienced. In a refreshing break from the espionage genre, Anderson’s Foreign Service Officer and retired Naval intelligence officer take on a global battle to uncover a plot with stunning twists that will keep you wondering to the end. –Alan Shearer

Ward Anderson gives us an imaginative work of fiction about what Putin and Trump negotiated at two meetings where the actual conversations remain unknown. And, thanks to the Supreme Court's recent ruling granting nearly full Presidential immunity for "any actions (criminal or not)", any transcripts held in the national archives may never be revealed.
Anderson's story revolves around the harrowing exfiltration of Putin's interpreter from Russia. The escape is promoted by two friends, both retired from military and diplomatic service, who succeed in convincing the newly elected President Biden to authorize the action that requires the cooperation and assistance of the CIA, NSA, US Department of State, etc. Wistfully I wish it were true because we should know what really transpired.

PUTIN’S INTERPRETER
A must read before voting in the 2024 Presidential election! This book could very well influence your voting decision. The Author, Ward Anderson, is a credible source on a very important and meaningful topic regarding Trumps relationship with Russia and its dictator Putin. Written in a compelling story form it reflects a true historic accounting of the discussion that took place in a private meeting between Trump and Putin during the Trump presidency. Although I was not surprised, it clarified and confirmed the things I suspected to be true. It is a thought provoking book and an exciting, fascinating read.

I love a fast moving book about international politics and intrigue. Anderson takes you inside what could have been earth-shaking if it had really happened. I grew up in Washington and Annapolis where the novel takes place in the US. Nothing could be closer to home for me and realistic to a close follower of international events. Well worth reading.
Did Presidents Trump and Putin seek to destabilize Ukraine during secret conversations? Foreign Service Officer Gavin Benson suspects so. Dmitri Petrov, Vladimir Putin's longtime interpreter and Benson’s counterpart, fears that as the third witness, he knows too much and is in danger from Putin. Petrov gave subtle hints to defect, and Benson and his retired Navy friend, Nick Lawrence, meet in Annapolis to follow up. Both served in the Senate Liaison Office in 1987 alongside then-Senator Biden, and they work to convince candidate Biden, if elected, to exfiltrate Putin's disenchanted interpreter from Russia. As polls during the 2020 election campaign show potential for a Biden victory, Benson travels to Moscow to confirm Petrov's interest. Petrov and his son Sergei, an accomplished pilot under sanctions for laundering money to buy Trump properties in New York, plan their escape. After Trump contests the election results, Trump's encouragement for his “Save America” rally followers to march on the Capitol on January 6, 2021 convinces Biden to proceed with the Russians’ defection. Benson, Lawrence, and the CIA develop a complex plan to pick up the Petrov family in Russia and take them to Latvia. But Petrov’s son, Sergei, thinks he has a better idea. He will fly his family out of Russia on his helicopter. The CIA is baffled when the Russian family misses their scheduled pickup. Benson anxiously waits in Latvia as the second impeachment trial of Trump is nearing its conclusion. Amidst a treacherous snowstorm, the Petrovs nearly crash but safely land in Latvia. Greeted by a relieved Benson, Petrov surprises Benson with damning recordings of Trump and Putin, revealing efforts to undermine Ukraine. While the Senate debates the impeachment of former President Trump, Biden's Executive Committee listens in disbelief to the contents of the Russian’s tapes. At Camp David, Biden has just a few hours to write the most important missive of his career. Senator Patrick Leahy reads the letter before a hushed Senate, leaving Trump's second impeachment vote and the nation in limbo.

Ward Anderson graduated with a B.A. in History from Bucknell University. Nine years as a U.S. Navy carrier-based fighter/attack pilot and Exchange Duty with the U.S.M.C. to fly the AV-8A Harrier vertical takeoff jet enhanced his respect for military and moral strength to maintain democratic ideals. As a Naval Reservist, Anderson's NATO deployments in the 1980s along the Iron Curtain furthered his understanding of the vulnerability of free border countries from Russia. Anderson flew for a major airline to cities in Europe, where he could not pass up a museum. A photographer, he was on the Board of Directors of The Maryland Federation of Art. He and Kathy live in Annapolis. They have sailed, raced, and cruised extended passages to the Caribbean, Canada, foggy, rocky Maine waters, and he now races a Harbor 20, often singlehanded.
Anderson's 2020 book was republished in 2022, a timely reminder of Russia’s undeclared wars and a glimpse into the future of Russian neighbor states. The resolve of NATO, the European Union, and the United States is being tested by President Vladimir Putin.

An excellent, well-researched, and beautifully written book. This is a moving work of historical fiction spanning virtually the entire life of one man and chronicling his epic struggles with the oppression of Stalin's regime, through WWII and the brutality of the German Army and far beyond. The descriptions of conditions and the harshness of life as a peasant farmer trying to escape oppression and stay alive are riveting. Escaping the Nazis was only the beginning of a life of suffering, poverty, and imprisonment, the protagonist's journey is a dark portrait of life under extreme, authoritarian rule. The author has managed to find points of light in this dark story, just as the reader begins to wonder how much the human spirit can withstand. Freedom and some sense of normalcy are short-lived, however. The dialogue is so well thought out and consistent, it reads much as if it were narrated by a Ukrainian, speaking in English. A wonderful piece of work. Highly recommended.
The 2014 invasion of Eastern Ukraine and Crimea compelled Anderson to write a novel that presents the excesses of Communist and Nazi regimes and the threat from a relentless Vladimir Putin. Equally important is the resilience of the protagonist and his family.
The book foretells Putin’s imperial ambitions and the February 2022 invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022.
